History

It is in the early 80’s that the history of the Caves Transmontanas begins. João Carvalho Maia, a passionate wine producer from the Douro region, traveled to distant Napa Valley to better learn the production methods used in this historic wine region of the United States. During his visit, he worked in the harvest and production of the world renowned - Schramsberg Vineyards. This Napa Valley symbol of excellence has dedicated its existence to the creation and development of quality sparkling wines according to the most rigorous traditions of the Champagne region.

At the end of the harvest season, the Portuguese producer invited the owner, Jack Davies, to visit Portugal and study the Douro region’s potential.

Jack Davies vacationed in the majestic scenery of vineyards and immediately realized that in the Douro there were conditions favorable for production of wines beyond the traditional Ports. He returned the following year accompanied by the technicians of his company to carry out micro-vinifications and choose from among three wine-producing regions (Minho, Bairrada and Douro), which of the three would be the most suitable for the creation and development of quality sparkling wines from their traditional varieties. During more than three years it was repeated several technical procedures until it was found the ideal zone for the production of sparkling wine: the choice fell on Cimo Corgo in Douro, a region with an altitude of 550 meters (almost 2000 feet) above sea level.

In June 1989, Caves Transmontanas were born.
